Introduction: This 3-week professional development course is a comprehensive delivery of the concepts of Geographic Information Systems, serves as excellent grounding in Geoinformatics and covers covers advanced topics in GPS.
Course Description: The course defines GIS and includes the history and growth of GIS. Various concepts of GIS are explained including maps and geospatial data. The course gives an overview of representing and organizing geospatial data as well as an overview of geoprocessing. The course explains how remotely sensed images are important in GIS. It further explains what spatial data analysis is and introduces the concepts of GIS project management.
Objectives: The objective of this course is to enable participants to understand the concepts of Geographic Information Systems as an information technology science and know the components of a GIS. Participants are expected to be able to analyse situations in which the use of GIS technology would offer an advantage. The course serves as a platform for more advanced modules such as GIS & GPS, Remote Sensing, Geospatial Programming and Digital Imaging Processing.
Teaching Description: The course employs a hands-on / practical as well as theory-based lecture approach that emphasizes understanding the concepts of GIS.
